Manila implements “earn and clean” policy for street vendors

It’s all about tents.

“Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno recently revealed that the city is implementing the ‘clean and earn’ policy for street vendors, which would help solve the problem of illegal sellers who simply resume their ativities despite many anti-streethawking operations,” reports Macon Ramos-Araneta in Manila Standard Today.

Under the policy, vendors who want to go “legit” have to rent tents in order to set up shop on a spot that’s permitted by the city government. Vendors of cigarettes and street food pay a daily rental of PHP50. Other vendors will be charged with a daily rate of PHP80.

Moreno revealed that at least 300 tents have been set up since october. “This will boost our campaign against illegal vendors as they will become legitimate. They will no longer have fears of being ejected in their places as they are paying for the space,” he said.
