Manila councilors revise traffic rules for trucks

Again, we don’t know if everyone will be happy about this.

“The city councilors of Manila have proposed an ordinance revising the existing policy on prohibiting trucks to access Manila routes at certain hours of the day as officials continue to implement strategies to rid the city of horrendous traffic,” reports Jenny F. Manongdo in the Manila Bulletin.

Under the proposed ordinance, cargo trucks, gravel and sand trucks and other heavy cargo trucks whose gross vehicle weights exceed 4,500 kilograms shall not be allowed to travel on any city streets from 9pm to 5am. This includes tractor trailers or containerized haulers.

The proposed policy, however, grants exemptions on trucks delivering construction materials such as sand, gravel, sacks of cement, and similar items whose destinations are not found along the truck routes.

According to the report, “companies should seek letter of permit from the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) upon recommendation from the Manila Police District Traffic Enforcement Unit (MPD-TEU).”
