Manila cop takes detainee’s mobile phone as a reward for working on her case

A policeman assigned to the Sampaloc Police Station has been charged with robbery for allegedly taking a detainee’s mobile phone as payment for his troubles.

Paperwork is very tiring work and complainant Angela Christine Apilan said Police Officer 2 Aaron Cortez of the Sampaloc Police Station wanted his effort rewarded.

“He told me that my phone is the payment,” Apilan said.

Apilan, who has been accused of illegal recruitment, said she surrendered on June 19 to clear her name but that PO2 Cortez detained her. He supposedly asked her for P50,000 to make the case go away.

Senior Police Officer 1 James Poso and Police Officer 3 Gilbert Isole of the Manila Police District General Assignment Section filed the robbery case against Cortez on Monday morning.

Poso said Cortez he did not appear last Sunday when he was summoned to explain the complaint against him.
