Let’s hope the residents’ lives won’t be endangered.
“The city government of Manila and the Manila Police District (MPD) have tapped 3,000 residents to serve as the MPD’s eyes and ears and report criminal activity in the city’s 896 barangays,” reports Annelle Tayao-Juego in Philippine Daily Inquirer.
MPD director Rolando Nana explained that the 3,000 citizens (both men and women) had “undergone training conducted by the six district station commanders on intelligence gathering and crime reporting.” They will form a network separate from the barangay tanod or village watchmen.
Nana pointed out that the volunteers “will be working pro bono in line with the crime prevention efforts of the Philippine National Police (PNP).” They will be issued IDs by the MPD.
Mayor Joseph Estrada presided over the volunteers’ oath-taking last Thu, Mar 17.
