Manila Archbishop to Catholics: Be humble

The Catholic clergy and laity in the Philippines should be humble despite having influence in the Catholic-dominated country, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said.

Half of Christians in Asia is in the Philippines…and while we rejoice and give thanks for this gift of God., there is that danger that, because we are the majority, we become complacent and self-focused,” Tagle said in a UCAN Philippines report.

He said members of the Roman Catholic Church should take cues from Pope Francis, who has demonstrated humility since his papacy began in March. “When I last met with the Pope…I told him, ‘Oh Cardinal Begoglio is now Pope Francis.’ He said ‘But I remain an ordinary person… A sinner who was called by God,’” Tagle said.
