UP Manila allows 4 students to graduate despite tuition woes

Has the school finally learned its lesson?

“Four students of University of the Philippines Manila who were initially barred from graduating for failing to pay tuition on time were allowed to settle their financial obligations and attend the commencement rites on April 25,” reports Janvic Mateo in The Philippine Star.

Former student regent Cleve Arguelles confirmed that he and the other senior political science students Mark Policarpio, Mark Quinto and Christian Durana will be considered for graduation.

However, Arguelles said, “Although we are happy, we will continue to call for the repeal of the ‘no late tuition’ policy as this might still affect other students in the future.”

Meanwhile, UP vice president for public affairs Prospero de Vera, citing recent amendments to the university code, said yesterday that the “no late tuition” policy has been scrapped.

Then again, we know we can’t just take this word for it. As this case already follows the tragic story of UP Manila student Kristel Tejada, who killed herself in 2013 due to tuition fee troubles.
