Mandaluyong pushes ‘sexist’ ordinance for motorcycle riders

It may strike some as sexist, but they’re doing it in a bid to stop riding-in-tandem crimes.

In a proposed Mandaluyong City ordinance, only women and kids can ride together without undergoing scrutiny while male bikers need papers.

“Mayor Benhur Abalos said the original ordinance—which requires riders, regardless of gender, to present documents proving their identities and blood relations—had been tweaked,” report Jaymee T. Gamil and Vanessa B. Hidalgo in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The report went on to explain: “The new version of the ordinance now allows two females or a female and a child to ride together without presenting such proof. The documents—mainly IDs and birth certificates—will be required only for male riders.”

The amendment is set for approval next Monday, August 11, after which it will be “pilot-tested” in the city for six months.

During the said six-month period, violators will not yet be penalized. They will only be subjected to “face inspection and questioning.”
