Man stabbed dead over poker game tiff

Who knew playing poker could be lethal?

“In the early hours of Sunday, March 2, 45-year-old Edgar Fidel, a resident of Barangay Greater Lagro, was beaten up and stabbed dead by his fellow poker players in Novaliches, Quezon City,” reports Jeannette I. Andrade in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Fidel’s attackers were identified as Tuling Escalera, Ian Escalera and a certain “Bayan,” all residents of Barangay Sta. Monica, Novaliches.

Apparently, at some point during the game, an argument broke out due to suspected cheating. Then, as the report detailed, “Fidel left but returned with a companion after several minutes, leading to the Escaleras and Bayan hitting him on the head with a lead pipe.” Then, one of the suspects stabbed Fidel repeatedly with a knife.

The three suspects fled. Fidel was taken to the Novaliches District Hospital, where he was declared dead due to head injuries and multiple stab wounds.

Police are now looking for the Escaleras and Bayan.
