A man welcomed the New Year in jail after getting arrested for lighting an illegal firecracker on New Year’s Eve in the village of San Roque in Navotas City.

So why did he do it? Apparently, the poor guy just wanted some good luck and fortune this 2019.

Senior Superintendent Ramchrisen Haveria Jr., the chief of the Navotas Police, identified the suspect as 19-year-old Prince Aldrin Villaruz, radio station RMN reported.

The suspect was caught in the act of igniting the triangular firecracker called regalo (gift) by police patrolling the area. He was arrested on Monday (Dec.31) at 10:15pmManila Bulletin stated.

Villaruz admitted to the crime and was quoted saying in Filipino by GMA News’ Balitambayan: “This is just to get rid of bad vibes, to bring in luck this year.”

Haveria, however, said that instead of good luck, bad luck can happen to those who use illegal firecrackers because of the danger it can cause, the same report added.

Haveria said that the regalo (firecracker) is prohibited because it could blow up without being ignited when it is exposed to heat or even just a little friction.

Villaruz will be charged for violating Republic Act 7183, an act regulating the sale, manufacture, distribution, and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices.

Maybe stick with sparklers next time?
