Some lines just shouldn’t be crossed, even in the name of friendship.

A 29-year-old guy was arrested in Sta. Mesa, Manila yesterday for allegedly bribing a police officer to release his friend from jail.

The unidentified man allegedly tried giving an officer PHP90,000 (US$1,727.09), in exchange for the freedom of his friend who was arrested earlier that day in an anti-drug operation, Supt. Ruben Ramos of the Sta. Mesa Police Station told ABS-CBN News.

And he did it right in the police station too.

Apparently, the friend’s wife had also gone to the police station to beg for her husband’s release. The 29-year-old said that he did not know his friend’s wife had talked to the police and said that he was just asked to bring money.

He was immediately arrested after offering the bribe, Bombo Radyo reported, and will face charges for violating Article 212 of the Revised Penal Code or corruption of public officials.

Ramos, the police officer, said the amount of money offered and the fact that they were able to obtain it so quickly are proof that the two suspects’ camp has a sizable source of income, the ABS-CBN report states.

Police found out about the jailed friend after drug customers and pushers authorities nabbed earlier that day pointed to him as their source. However, the friend said that he was just a drug runner.
