Malacanang supports motorcade ban

The President is supporting the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in it’s bid to regulate political rallies and campaign motorcades in major thoroughfares all over the metropolis due to monstrous traffic jams they cause.

In a Philippine Star report, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte praised MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino’s proposal as reasonable. The Palace official stated that these motorcades add to the daily traffic build up and inconvenience motorists and commuters. Ealier, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it would issue a resolution prohibiting campaign motorcades on main roads.

The move stemmed from a petition from the MMDA chairman after they received flak for the traffic jams and road reroutings caused by campaign rallies last week. Apart from banning rallies and motorcades on traffic congested areas, the MMDA also suggested that the Comelec consider filing an election offense against politicians who continue to hold motorcades and political rallies at prohibited areas.
