Malacañang on finding solutions for traffic woes: ‘It’s a work in progress’

Malacañang once again asked the public for patience and understanding as efforts to solve Metro Manila’s horrendous traffic are ongoing.

“This is a major concern for the motorists and we want to make sure that this issue of traffic will be solved on a daily basis, making improvements in the whole system, and that is why it’s a work in progress,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.

Lacierda said the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) continues to find ways in improving traffic in the metro, especially along EDSA.

He said the administration is also waiting for the completion of some road projects that are expected to ease traffic flow in the capital.

“We hope also that the infrastructure improvements that we are doing will be hastened, so that the flow of traffic will be done, for instance, our NLEx-SLEx connector road,” Lacierda said.

The NLEX-SLEX connector road will bypass EDSA, allowing motorists to go from the north to the south or vice versa for only 15 minutes.

“Again, this is a work in progress, and as always, we have always asked for understanding and patience, and I know how difficult it is for all the motorists, especially who ply EDSA,” said Lacierda.

The spokesman said the government is also aware that the opposition is often using the traffic situation as a campaign pitch against them.

“It’s not per se a ‘campaign issue’ because it’s always an issue that we confront everyday. In and of itself, it is not a campaign issue, it’s an everyday problem that we have to contend with,” he said.

He went on to say, “I suppose some people would use that. Some people would use that but they should also take caution with the fact that government, our non-partisan agencies, for instance-the Highway Patrol Group – are doing a major effort in improving the flow of traffic in EDSA. This is not a political issue as far as the government is concerned.”
