No, this is not a hoax and we didn’t make it up. Plus, based on its surreality level, it’s no surprise why this story came out just now.
Last June 2013, a suspect named Nicole Chai was arrested for illegal recruitment and large scale estafa. Based on police records, Chai was identified as “female” and, thus, was ordered by the court to be detained at the Malabon City Jail’s female dormitory.
“Then, on Feb 4, 2014, Chai died of a heart attack. It was only at the hospital that doctors discovered that ‘she’ was actually biologically male,” reports veteran ABS-CBN News crime reporter Gus Abelgas on ABS-CBNnews.com.
As it turns out, police and medical personnel didn’t exactly do a thorough physical check of Chai upon arrest. Even court records referred to Chai as female.

The report noted: “Police records also show that Chai declared herself as a female during the arrest. Moreover, the Pagamutan Bayan ng Malabon also indicated in its medical records that Chai was female. Doctors admitted that they only did a visual check on the suspect.”
And now, it can be revealed that Chai’s real name was actually Sibeng Chai Chua Jr. and that “she” was born in Marinduque. However, jail authorities, as well as other inmates, confirmed that they never had a clue about Chai’s secret, as she looked, sounded, and acted female.
Due to this mix-up, the report revealed that “Malabon jail authorities have launched an intervention program in which all incoming detainees should undergo physical check before admission.”
We just have to ask: Didn’t anyone ever figure out that the suspect had actually given them a fake name in the first place?
