Makati set to give grocery packs to 97,000 public school students

The city of Makati may be ditching Christmas parties this year, but it’s still giving away grocery items to 97,000 public school students.

“Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay said each public school student from preschool to high school, including K to 12 students, will be getting one grocery bag as their Christmas gift this December,” reports Mike Frialde on Philstar.com. Each bag will contain food items and drinks such as raisins, oatmeal, cheese, choco chips, powdered chocolate milk, crackers, cereals, cookies, bread sticks, and the like.

The Makati City Council has approved City Ordinance No. 2013-A-020 appropriating PHP97,359,000 for the project. According to Binay, the amount will be taken from Makati’s savings from its 2012 budget.

The Center for Health Department of the Department of Health (CHD-DOH) has expressed its support for the program.
