(UPDATED) A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit North Cotabato at 9:04am today, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) announced in a bulletin, leading residents in different areas in Mindanao to flee for safety.

The PHILVOCS said the epicenter was located northeast of the town of Tulunan. Damage and aftershocks are expected.

According to MindaNews, at least two persons died from today’s earthquake. Nestor Narciso, 67, a retired ambulance driver was killed after the second floor of a church in Koronadal City, South Cotabato collapsed this morning. He was working on the ground when debris fell on his head.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 30 people were injured in Kidapawan City while 13 were hurt in M’lang town in North Cotabato, GMA News reported.

In Tulunan, work and classes have been suspended to allow the local government to check several buildings for damage, ABS-CBN News reports.

The quake comes less than two weeks after another one struck the town of Makilala, also in Cotabato province, leaving at least five people dead across Mindanao.

This is a developing story.
