“The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a magnitude 5.4 earthquake emanated from northeast of Looc, Occidental Mindoro on Monday evening, October 19,” reports GMA News Online.
The report noted: “Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic in origin, had a ‘depth of focus’ of 100 kilometers, and no damage is expected to result from it, but aftershocks could follow.”
The reports went on to state that the earthquake “was felt at Intensity V in Looc, Abra de Ilog and Paluan in Occidental Mindoro; and in Batangas City.”
The quake was likewise felt at Intensity IV Muntinlupa, Pasay, Tagaytay, Mandaluyong, Makati, Parañaque and Calamba City; Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, as well as San Pedro and Canlubang Laguna; Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro; General Trias and Bacoor Cavite.
Intensity III was felt in Angeles, Calapan, Quezon, Mandaluyong, Taguig and Manila City; Talisay and Agoncillo Batangas; Malolos, Obando, and Bulacan Bulacan.
Intensity II was felt in Pasig, Antipolo and Las Piñas City; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Plaridel and Marilao Bulacan; Pateros, Metro Manila; and in Lucban, Quezon.
Phivolcs pointed out that “Intensity V is ‘strong’ and has these observable characteristics: Strong shaking and rocking felt throughout building. Hanging objects swing violently. Dining utensils clatter and clink; some are broken. Small, light and unstable objects may fall or overturn. Liquids spill from filled open containers. Standing vehicles rock noticeably. Shaking of leaves and twigs of trees are noticeable.”
Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was in Balitoc, Calatagan in Batangas, which is to the northeast of Looc.
