A college student was shot dead yesterday after he allegedly attacked several army men at a checkpoint with a machete in Indanan town in Sulu.

The student was identified as Fersaudi Arabani, a sophomore information technology student at Mindanao State University, the Philippine Star reported. Maj. Gen. Corleto S. Vinluan Jr. told The Philippine Daily Inquirer that Arabani shouted “Allahu Akbar!” as he rushed the checkpoint at 12:45pm.

One soldier received a cut on his right cheek, SunStar Zamboanga reported. The attack ended after one soldier shot Arabani, who died immediately. Police investigators allegedly found a sachet of methamphetamine in Arabani’s possession as well as his certificate of school registration.

Meanwhile, the wounded soldier was brought to Camp Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital in nearby Jolo for treatment. The army and police are currently investigating if the suspect was affiliated with any terrorist group and what prompted the attack.
