Eight students of Juan Sumulong High School in Cubao, Quezon City were rushed to the hospital after eating tainted macapuno candies on Thu, Jul 16.

The students suddenly vomited and complained of stomach pains after consuming free samples of macapuno candies given by a vendor from Calauan, Laguna, according to Assistant Health Secretary Elmer Punzalan.

The students are now at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center. Four of them were sent to the intensive care unit after exhibiting more serious signs of food poisoning such as hypersalivation and abnormal heart rate.

Samples of the candies have been sent to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for examination, but authorities are looking at Organophosphate, a chemical found in pesticides, as the culprit. —from a report by Zandro Ochona, dzMM
