LRT management says they can’t handle more passengers

Due to the 15 major road projects that will start being done in Metro Manila this year, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) had warned that traffic would become pure hell. The folks at the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) are confirming that.

“LRTA management admitted that they won’t be able to handle the influx of additional passengers in LRT Line 1 if it becomes an alternative mode of transportation for those affected by major infrastructure projects all over Metro Manila,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

LRTA spokesperson Atty. Hernando Cabrera said that they “already have their hands full with about 500,000 passengers on a normal day.” Moreover, he pointed out that out of the 33 trains in Line 1, only 28 or 29 trains can be used since four to five trains are still being repaired.

Cabrera likewise added that they “will not be able to extend operating hours because they use after-operation hours to maintain and check their trains.”

Already, the LRT has turned more crowded than usual even though many of the major metro projects have not yet started.

By the way, the Cabrera said they don’t expect any additional trains soon.
