UP Los Baños student raped near campus, rapist arrested

Sometimes, we wonder what it would take to make these criminals stop.

“Another female student of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) was raped almost on the same spot where UPLB student Given Grace Cebanico was raped and killed almost at the same time three years ago in 2011,” reports Maricar Cinco in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Dr. Enrique Tolentino Jr., the UPLB Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, confirmed that “the rape of a 17-year-old female college student has been reported to the police, but he requested that all information regarding the identity of the victim be withheld.”

The report noted: “Tolentino said probers have learned that the victim left the UPLB campus, after attending a student event, around 9pm on Wednesday, October 15.”

The victim got on a tricycle and asked to be brought home to Barangay Paciano Rizal, also referred to as Barangay Mainit.

However, the tricycle driver instead drove to a dim portion along the IPB Road. When he stopped the tricycle, he reportedly threatened the victim with a weapon. The report said that “it was still unclear what kind of weapon was used.”

After sexually assaulting the victim, the tricycle driver left her on the spot. The victim was later spotted “walking” by a UPLB security guard.

The report indicated that “UPLB officials are closely working with the local police and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon region) to solve the case.”

Meanwhile, an ABS-CBNnews.com report broke the news that Laguna Police Director Senior Superintendent Florendo Saligao told radio DZMM they arrested the suspect, tricycle driver Jose “Joey” Montecillo at around 12:45am on Fri, Oct 17.

The tricycle driver was positively identified by the victim and he also reportedly confessed to the crime.

Montecillo was tagged as a “colorum” tricycle driver.
