“Kalye Serye” is totally owning 2015.
AlDub, of course, has been the easy, first choice favorite. But Lola Nidora? She’s got her own cult following.
Blogger Mervz Adventurista aka Pinoy Adventurista snapped a photo of a giant Lola Nidora papier mache parading the streets of Angono, Rizal, at Sunday’s Higantes Festival — kilay, fascinator, colorful garb and all.
She was among the 100 higantes crafted by the artists of the community, who this year put the focus on pop culture.
There were other Higantes wearing Lola Nidora’s famous slogan, “Tamang Panahon”, walking alongside familiar figures like Naruto and Psy.
The Higantes Festival is a town tradition honoring San Clemente that has been carried out since the Spanish era. Tourists flock to Angono every year to join the residents in enjoying the parade of papier mache giants towering up to 12-feet tall.
According to Angono’s Public Information Officer Anthony Quejano, the festival also became an outlet for their ancestors to troll the encomienda system instituted by Spanish colonizers.
“Yung mga higates, mga effigy or caricature ng mga amo nilang Kastila, yung mga may ari ng lupa, ipaparada nila sa kalye yan pag fiesta, tapos binabato nila ng mga gulay tulad ng kamatis,” he said.
There is no contest for the Higantes Festival, continues Quejano. “Sumasali lang sila para ipagpatuloy ang kinaugalian na naming dito sa Angono.”
