Cancel all your Sunday morning plans on Dec 22 — you might want to sleep in.
“Filipinos will experience the longest night this year, or the winter solstice, on Dec. 21, says the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said,” reports Helen Flores in The Philippine Star.
As the sun sets around 5:32pm of Dec 21, darkness will last until 6:16am the next day. That’s 12 hours and 44 minutes of night time darkness.
The phenomenon is called winter solstice, when the sun lies at its “farthest point south of the equator.” The good news is that after this winter solstice, the weather bureau expects the mercury to dip further until around February, so bring out your thick blankets.
