In a tragic incident at a public beach in Bantayan Island, Cebu, a tourist from Bohol lost her life after being stung by a box jellyfish while swimming. Mayor Ithamar Espinosa of Santa Fe confirmed the unfortunate incident in an official statement.
The incident occurred on Sunday near the Santa Fe, Bantayan Island cliff.
“Our thoughts are with the affected family during this difficult time. May the departed soul rest in peace, and let us unite in our efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future,” stated Mayor Espinosa.
Acknowledging the potential risks associated with box jellyfish encounters, the mayor urged the public to adhere to safety guidelines when participating in water activities.
“The safety of our residents and visitors is of paramount importance. Box jellyfish encounters can be dangerous,” the mayor stressed. “We reiterate our reminder to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines while engaging in water activities and swimming.”
This tragic incident follows a previous advisory issued by the Santa Fe LGU on June 9, urging caution during the jellyfish season, when a significant number of jellyfish are present in the waters.
“During this period, the likelihood of encountering jellyfish in coastal areas is higher. Jellyfish can vary in size, shape, and the severity of their stings. Although most jellyfish stings are not life-threatening, they can cause discomfort, pain, and sometimes allergic reactions,” the advisory stated.
Known for its white sand beaches, Bantayan Island is a popular tourist destination northwest of the main Cebu island.
Complications from box jellyfish stings may cause a life-threatening condition called the Irukandji syndrome. Symptoms include back pain, muscle cramps, high heart rates, a drop in blood pressure, and heart complications.
