The majority of Filipinos have reported that their lives have become terrible for the past 12 months, according to a survey from the Social Weather Stations (SWS) released yesterday.
As high as 79% of those surveyed said their quality of life became worse (called “losers” in the survey), while only 12% said it remained the same and 8% said it got better. The 79% recorded is slightly better than the percentage found in SWS’ May 2020 survey, where 83% reported that their lives have become unsatisfactory.
The non-commissioned survey, conducted from July 3 to 6, was done through mobile phone and computer-assisted telephone interviewing of 1,555 respondents aged 18 and above. The majority of the respondents were from Mindanao (410), followed by Visayas (388), Luzon (451), and the National Capital Region (306).
Much of the Philippines remains on lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus, but the country has recorded the most number of cases in Southeast Asia. As of yesterday, 147,526 cases have been tallied, with 2,426 dead and 70,387 recovered from the illness.
At least 2 million Filipinos have lost their jobs while countless businesses have had to close because of the coronavirus quarantines. As a result, the Philippine economy has suffered its first recession since 1981, the tail end of the Marcos regime.
