Lawyers want graphic health warnings on cigarette packs

Will gory pictures of nicotine-damaged lungs and cancer-stricken people convince smokers to quit smoking permanently? Well, it’s worth a try.

“Six lawyers from the University of the Philippines—Diana Triviño, Ipat Luna, Raul Pangalanan, Evita Ricafort, Rosario Larracas, and Patricia Miranda—and one from the Ateneo de Manila University—Carla Rocas—have filed a motion with the Supreme Court, requesting oral arguments on three consolidated cases of the Department of Health (DOH) vs. tobacco companies” reports Rio N. Araja of Manila Standard Today.

The cases referred to were DOH vs. Mighty (Corp.), DOH vs. Fortune (Tobacco Corp.), and (former health secretary Juan) Flavier, et al. vs. Fortune, et al.

With the move, the lawyers are backing the call made by former DOH secretaries urging the SC to act “on a consolidated case of graphic health warnings against cigar manufacturers.” The former DOH sectaries mentioned were Esperanza Cabral, Alfredo Bengzon, Francisco Duque, Jaime Galvez Tan, Alfredo Romualdez, and Juan Flavier.

The report quoted Triviño, who said, “It is clear that Filipinos need the graphic health warnings to better educate them about the dangers of smoking.”
