Pacman has his defenders.
“Members of the House of Representatives have asked the government’s top tax collector to give Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao ‘peace of mind’ so he can concentrate on his scheduled training for what has been dubbed as the ‘fight of the century’ against undefeated American champion Floyd Mayweather Jr,” reports Ben Rosario in Manila Bulletin.
The report explained that “the lawmakers rallied behind Pacquiao after Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares badgered him on Monday, February 23, with a reminder on his alleged tax liabilities that could reach several billions of pesos.”
Northern Samar Rep. Emil Ong said, “We appeal to Commissioner Henares to give due consideration and not to make an issue about it at this point in time. The BIR should now give Congressman Pacquiao peace of mind. He should be supported as he concentrates on what is probably the toughest but the most important ring assignment he is set to tackle.”
For his part Manila Rep. Amado Bagatsing, vice chairman of the House Committee on Youth and Sports, stated, “Commissioner Henares should let Manny concentrate on this very important fight of his life. The BIR will collect more from the congressman after the fight.”
Bagatsing and Ong added that “Henares should realize that the much-awaited bout is not Pacquiao’s fight but the whole Philippines as well.”
Rep. Lito Atienza also had these words for Pacquiao: “Don’t worry about Congress, just win and make your countrymen proud.”
