Infant formula and feeding bottles should be banned to force women to breastfeed, a representative of a partylist for nurses said.
Abante reports ANG NARS partylist Representative Leah Paquiz wants to ban feeding bottles, which she said contain lead. “When the plastic is boiled, the lead melts and the baby drinks it,” she said in Filipino.
Paquiz’s proposal to ban infant formula and baby bottles comes after news that multinational healthcare company Nutricia announced a recall of its Karicare Infant Formula Stage 1 and Stage 2 over contamination by bacteria.
She added many mothers use infant formula and feeding bottles as a status symbol even though doing so puts their children at risk.
“I have heard this from some mothers: A child who was raised through breastfeeding is also a person, but a child who grew up on milk from animals is also an animal,” she said, without any medical or logical basis.
