The last goodbye: Miriam tells grandkids, ‘I’m going home now’

The fiery Miriam Defensor Santiago — a woman whose career in government service could be described as undoubtedly memorable — died on Sep 29. She was finally laid to rest on Sun, Oct 2. She was 71.

The former lawmaker’s remains were laid to rest at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City. Her burial site was right beside her son Alexander’s. The latter had died in 2003.

Mechel T. Santiago — wife of the former senator’s other son Archie — shared two video clips showing Miriam saying goodbye to her grandchildren.

Mechel wrote these words to accompany the video clips: “‘I’m going home now… I’m going home now…’ Grandma uttered these words before leaving the kids, in one of her visits at the house.”

She went on to address Miriam, writing, “It is very hard, Ma. Of my five kids, only Mea and Madison knew what happened. The rest only thinks that you are in the hospital. It’s hard to hear them every night praying for you to get well and come home soon. Once they are ready, we will tell all the kids that you are indeed home already … in the hands of God, with their Uncle Alex.”

Mechel ended her note with these words: “We love you, Ma!”
