There’s no etiquette book for making donations but, apparently, there are some presumably well-meaning gestures that rub some people the wrong way.
In an article published on the Top Gear Philippines website, Land Rover Philippines executive director Marc Soong’s Instagram annoumcement was quoted. He had posted a photo of the vehicle with this caption: “We flock together again in this time of need. Let’s get together and help the victims of typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan. Any Land Rover sold, we will also donate PHP100,000 to the calamity (victims). Plus, we will do our best to support all relief efforts.”
While some people who praised the Land Rover donation pledge, Twitter users like Mark Daniel Trinidad commented, “Land Rover and Jaguar to donate 100k to yolanda victims for every unit sold. Kulang pa sa downpayment yung donation hahaha.”
There’s also Zyra Masangkay who tweeted, “You have to buy a Jaguar or Land Rover for them to donate 100k to #YolandaPH victims? Ridiculous marketing strategy!!!”
Another Twitter user, Maika Cruz, tweeted, “That “buy a Land Rover today and we’ll donate 100k to typhoon victims” promo is despicable.” She also added: “I’m sure they have good intentions but the message was delivered poorly. So sad.”
In any case, a commenter on the Top gear Philippines website wrote, “Good move by Jaguar and Land Rover Philippines, may God Bless you all.”
