He was not the matchmaker that they thought he was.

“On Thursday afternoon, April 16, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested a 40-year-old Korean national named Jong Bam-lee for duping three Filipino women into fake marriages with Korean men, who later subjected them to physical and sexual abuse,” reports Julliane Love De Jesus on Inquirer.net.

CIDG operatives nabbed Jong along Polar Street in Barangay Bel Air, Makati City and charged him for violating anti-trafficking and anti-mail-order bride laws.

The report noted: “According to Police Director Benjamin Magalong, Jong promised the Pinays marriage with Korean men but instead, they ended up working as slaves, with one 23-year-old victim repeatedly sexually abused by her ‘husband.'”

Senior Supt. Rolando Anduyan — the head of the Women and Children’s Protection Unit (WCPU) of the CIDG — added that “women should be vigilant in their actions in dealing with persons who match them with foreigners and give false information about the background of their future spouses.”

Anduyan pointed out that the initial deceit often indicates that the arrangement will be abusive.
