If your kids wants to sing carols to earn some cash this Christmas, then you better be with them or they’ll be “rescued” by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
“Amante Salvador, head of the Street Dweller Care Unit, said the agency has partnered with DSWD in an intensified campaign to rid the streets of Metro Manila of vagrants and street dwellers this Christmas season,” reports Anna Liza Villas in the Manila Bulletin.
Salvador went on to disclose that last week, “at least 148 street kids were rounded up in Manila.” The report also revealed that “the MMDA has turned over to DSWD some 300 capsule beds to accommodate more street dwellers.”
