A total of 14,127 dancers, comprised mostly of students, participated in Kidapawan City’s attempt to set a world record for the largest cha-cha dance presentation on Tue, Aug 30.
Singapore currently holds the Guinness Book of World Records for that feat, with a mere 3,379 participants.
This was also an attempt by Kidapawan, located in the Mindanao region of the Philippines, to upgrade its image abroad.
Earlier this year, more than a hundred people were injured during a bloody dispersal of farmers.

“We already achieved our goal. We already have changed the landscape of our city,” city tourism and investment promotions officer Joey Recemilla told GMA News.
At least three professional dancers, one of them a British national, witnessed the five-minute routine, which was held in time for the city’s fruit fests.
Inspired by the positive response from his constituents, Kidapawan city mayor Joseph Evangelista said that he wants to attempt breaking the record again next year.
“We will again try to break our own record in 2017,” he said.
