Kerry and Duterte bond over riding bikes and hunting

The power of small talk is undeniable, even for the most influential figures in politics.

US Secretary of State John Kerry bonded with President Rodrigo Duterte over their common love of riding motorcycles and hunting during his visit at the Malacanang Palace for a courtesy call last Wed, Jul 27.

Before discussing sensitive issues such like terrorism, crime, and drugs, the two bonded over their hobbies first.

“It was a very interesting lunch because they shared common interests. They talked about motorcycles and hunting. And Mr. Kerry talked about how he had a motorcycle and he had a funny incident regarding that,” said Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella.

Though the President recognized that the US and the Philippines remain allies, he had been vocal about criticizing Americans for importing terrorism in other countries such as Iraq.

The US Secretary of State used their common interest to establish a good relationship with the new President.

President Duterte is known to ride big bikes around Davao to check on his city’s situation.

Kerry is also a motorcycle enthusiast. The former senator once appeared on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” riding a Harley-Davidson and wearing a leather jacket.

Duterte and Kerry then affirmed the long-standing relationship between the two countries. Abella said the two also discussed common concerns like climate change and the dispute about the West Philippine Sea.

Kerry stayed in Manila from July 26 to 27. He was the highest Cabinet member of US President Barack Obama’s administration to visit President Duterte so far. -with reports from the Presidential Communications Facebook page
