Kamikazee ends its 15-year run with an explosive ‘Huling Sayaw’ show

And it is done.

Kamikazee, the fun-loving rockers who’ve given us hilarious but heavy-hitting songs in the last 15 years has taken an indefinite hiatus. The band’s Huling Sayaw show at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last Thursday was attended by at least 15,000 folks from all over the country.

“Kaya pala natin ang Araneta,” vocalist Jay Contreas said in disbelief that evening.

The show was organized in two short months, and as soon as it was announced in October, tickets flew out the window. On Facebook Thursday morning ahead of the show, the band announced that Araneta opened another section just to accommate the demand.

Their comrades Queso, ChicoSci, and Urbandub joined Kamikazee as opening acts. RnB singer Kyla joined the band when the band performed the evening’s 13th song, “Huling Sayaw”.

Kamikazee opened with crowd favorite “Chiksilog”, off 2006’s Maharot album. It is the band’s sophomore release, which contrary to rock n’ roll supersition, achieved for the band tremendous mainstream success.

They quickly followed it up with “Seksi Seksi” and “Unang Tikim”.

Among the covers that Kamikazee performed that evening were Parokya ni Edgar’s “Halaga” and Hale’s “The Day You Said Goodnight”. The band opened their encore with their famous rendition of Britney Spear’s “Lucky”. It was also during encore when they performed Apo’s “Doobie Doo”.

It was a goosebump-inducing moment when Kamikazee launched into their biggest hit to date, “Narda” with the entire Araneta crowd bursting into song and dance, singing along with Jay who was traversing the walkway that stretched the whole length of coliseum.

They hugged each other, took their final bow and left the stage. That was a hell of a ride, Kamikazee! Thank you!
