Cracking jokes about former Senator Juan Ponce Enrile’s longevity in politics and well, life, in general, isn’t exactly new if you’re a true blue Filipino, but a couple of videos posted by his granddaughter yesterday is creatively adding to the convo.

Kris Ponce-Enrile posted a half-minute video of her 96-year-old grandpa which shows the elder Enrile sitting in a lawn surrounded by a handful of people decked in dinosaur costumes circling him about as he pats and pets each of them.

The video cleverly plays the Jurassic Park music theme in the background, while the other footage has Jason Derulo’s Savage Love playing while the same human-sized dinos crowd the nonagenarian senator for nearly a minute.

Commenters like Hazel Shin Ubalde were quick to point out that they missed their own lolos or grandpas after watching the video, and wished Enrile a longer life, as if he doesn’t already.

Some two months back, numerous memes about the retired senator poked fun on his apparent “immortality.” Amid the pandemic, rumors about him being afflicted with the virus have brought the 96-year-old to go on video to prove that he’s still very much alive. He was seen waving at his granddaughter’s camera saying, “COVID, go away!”

Though the memes and videos have been nothing short of light viewing, a less-lighter point of fact that needs to be addressed is that Enrile has been accused of attempting to revise Philippine history.

Enrile, who was the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ former defense minister and chief implementer of martial law, once claimed that the Philippines was “peaceful” and “free” during those horrific years. This, despite proof of countless human rights violations which took place at the time.

This was pointed out by detractors such as @tampabayandie, who tweeted, “Why in f*ck are you so amused by Juan Ponce Enrile, he’s killed people.”

Enrile is currently facing a plunder and graft case that was filed against him in 2015 for his alleged involvement in a multi-million-peso pork barrel scam. He’s enjoying his freedom after posting a PHP1 million bail in August that same year.

After serving more than 50 years in the government, he announced his retirement in 2016.
