Is June 21 the longest day of the year?

Relax, this is not a hoax.

“The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that Filipinos will experience today, Saturday, June 21, the longest daytime of the year as the earth reaches the summer solstice,” reports Helen Flores in The Philippine Star.

In a statement, PAGASA noted: “The Philippine nights are at their shortest and daytimes are at their longest around the summer solstice, which falls on June 21 at 6:51pm (Philippine Standard Time).”

They said daytime will last for 12 hours, 59 minutes and 36 seconds.

PAGASA explained that “during the summer solstice, the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun to its maximum extent.”
