The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is gearing up for the nationwide protest by jeepney association Piston on Mon, June 5 — coinciding with the first day of classes for some schools.

According to an ABS-CBN News report, LTFRB board member and spokesperson Atty. Aileen Lizada has assigned LTFRB regional directors to coordinate with the local government and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to assess tomorrow’s traffic situation.

Piston has announced a ‘transport caravan’ protest in Metro Manila, as well as “tigil-pasada” protests in Capiz, Aklak, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental. The jeepney group is also studying how to hold protests in martial law-stricken Mindanao.

The protest aims to show their disapproval on the government’s plans to phase out jeepneys.

However, Lizada pointed out that only passenger buses and UV express vans 15 years or older are affected by the phase out order under the omnibus franchising guidelines scheduled to be officially signed on June 19.
