It’s nice to know we’re doing something right.

“During the Metro Manila earthquake drill on Thu, Jul 30, Hayato Nakamura, project formulation advisor on disaster management at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Philippine office, was at the national government’s ‘incident command post’ set up inside the main military camp in Quezon City to observe how the government and other emergency response agencies would react after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake,” reports Ronron Calunsod on Kyodo News.

According to Kyodo News, Nakamura described the Metro Manila quake drill as “impressive.”

“Actually, JICA supported the Office of Civil Defense in formulating a national disaster response plan for earthquakes and tsunami. It’s very good that they tested it (now). It’s very good that the Metro Manila Development Authority and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology initiated this activity,” Nakamura said.

The report recalled that “JICA had helped the Philippine government conduct a 2004 study on the possible impact of a magnitude 7.2 quake in Metro Manila which revealed that out of its population of 10 million, some 33,500 people could die and 113,600 could be injured.”
