Equestrian Jan Catherine Sy, the granddaughter of the late SM Supermalls founder Henry Sy Sr., died last night after a brief hospital stay. She was 29.

She died at 6:35pm of sepsis, the sports website Spin said. Mayo Clinic says sepsis “occurs when the body’s response to an infection damages its own tissues.”

Senator Joel Villanueva, a friend of Jan’s father Henry “Big Boy” Sy Jr., expressed his condolences to the family in a tweet that appeared last night.

“Our deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones. Much love and prayers,” he said.

Jan was the vice president of SM’s real estate arm, SM Development Corporation. She started competing at 13 years old and trained in Le Mans, France, she told The Philippine Daily Inquirer in an interview in February. She competed every few weeks in Europe in 2019 until the pandemic struck. She was also an avid surfer and had hit the waves of Hawaii, Gold Coast in Australia, and Baler, Quezon.
