It’s official: May 13 is a non-working holiday

The President has declared May 13 a special public holiday, not so we can goof off, but so we can vote in the midterm elections.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda made the announcement on Wednesday, saying “the President wishes to enable the Filipino people to exercise their right to suffrage.”

As a non-working holiday, employees who are made to work on election day will be paid 130 percent their daily rate. Those who don’t work won’t get paid. It’s an election, not Christmas.

“We enjoin all eligible to use this non-working holiday to participate in the electoral process that forms the bedrock of our democracy,” Lacierda said.
