You’ll probably never notice it unless you’re standing under it — LOL — but Ayala Bridge now stands higher by 70 centimeters, or less than a yard of fabric.
It took engineers two hours to lift the steel bridge that links the Manila districts of San Miguel and Arroceros. The bridge was first built in 1872 by Don Jacobo Zobel de Ayala (hence its name) but was reconstructed in 1908.
The PHP447.90-mllion repair and rehabilitation officially started in May last year, and the bridge has been closed to traffic since March 21. It was lifted to give additional headspace for barges passing through Pasig River.
