Is this the Olympics? PH has 20th highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world

This is not exactly a “Proud to be Pinoy” moment.

The Philippines has become the country with the 20th highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world, according to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center, which tracks the extent of the pandemic.

The Department of Health reported yesterday that there are now 314,079 cases in the country, the same number reflected in the Maryland-based institution’s website. The Philippines overtook Pakistan, which landed at 21st place with 312,806 cases.

While the Philippines has the highest number of cases in Southeast Asia, the Duterte government has said that only 54,294 are considered to be “active” cases or patients who are still infected with the coronavirus. As of yesterday, at least 5,562 have died of the respiratory disease in the country.

Meanwhile, the United States has the highest number of cases in the globe at 7,277,352, followed by India (6,312,584) and Brazil (4,810,935).

Metro Manila, the epicenter of the pandemic in the country, will remain under the general community quarantine until the end of October. Experts from the University of the Philippines have said that while the virus’ reproduction number has lowered for the past few weeks, easing the quarantine could reverse the country’s progress.
