Tension erupted between informal settlers and a demolition team in Barangay 86, Zone 8, Caloocan City, Tuesday morning after informal settlers started throwing rocks at the demolition team.
Informal settlers in Calaanan Compound hurled rocks at the demolition team as the latter attempted to dismantle their homes.
A radio DZMM report said several gunshots were heard during the demolition.
Several armed policemen were also spotted in the area.
The sherriff of Caloocan City Regional Trial Court Branch 128 served the writ of demolition issued by Judge Eleanor Wong.
The writ indicates that the lot is owned by a certain Ramon and Natividad Nisip.
The residents said they were only offered about PHP60,000 to leave the half a hectare lot, which they said has been their home for about four decades. They said they were not offered any relocation site.
The residents filed an appeal before the Court of Appeals against the lower court’s decision, but this was dismissed.
As the tension died down, the demolition team started tearing down about 500 houses in the informal settlement near EDSA-Monumento.
At least two policemen sustained injuries after being hit by rocks. A certain PO1 Virgilio Catangis of the Northern Police District Public Safety Battalion was rushed to Manila Central University Hospital after being shot with a homemade gun.
A portion of EDSA-Monumento was closed to traffic due to the demolition. With reports from Dennis Datu, dzMM
