What’s in a name change?
“Incoming Labor Secretary Silvestro Bello III is planning to change the name of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to Department of Labor Management (DOLM) when he assumes post next month,” reports Ivy C. Tejano on Sun.Star Davao.
Bello talked about his name change plan during a press conference held on Tue, Jun 21, at the Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City.
He explained, “This is to give focus to the management, which seemed to be neglected under the name of the department, making it one-sided.”
Bello added that he would also aim to put an end to contractualization, which the report described as “a labor practice in the country where companies hire workers for a period of six months or less, depriving workers of security of tenure.”
For starters, Bello said companies would no longer bellowed to employ over 10% of its workers under contract.
The report noted: “President-elect Rodrigo Duterte earlier gave marching orders to Bello to strictly implement the laws against labor contractualization. Bello said he would work on for the regularization of the employees in different companies and/or agencies within three-to-six months.”
