A man in Iloilo was arrested after he was accused of setting his own house on fire following a fight with his wife.

According to the suspect’s wife, “Inday,” she and her husband had an argument Friday night. Her husband allegedly hurt her after learning that she spent PHP8,000 from the PHP30,000 emergency shelter assistance money they received for the repair of their house.

Inday said after an exchange of words, her husband hit her. She fled with her two children to a nearby area where there was a wake. Minutes later, her neighbors informed her that their house was already on fire.

When she checked, she found her house, which was made of light materials, being gutted by fire. She added that her husband got angrier upon seeing her.

Firefighters were not able to respond immediately as her house is located in a remote area.

The husband claimed that the fire started after a candle he left inside the house accidentally fell on combustible materials.

The suspect is currently under the custody of the police while investigation on the incident is ongoing.
