“Police investigators have filed multiple murder charges against Iligan City Mayor Celso Regencia (see photo below) and 14 others for killing three bodyguards of Iligan Rep. Vicente Belmonte in an ambush near the Laguindingin Airport last December,” report Lance Baconguis and A. Perez Rimando in Manila Standard Today.

The cases were filed at the Misamis Oriental Prosecutor’s Office in Cagayan de Oro City.

Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum — regional director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) — explained, “The cases were based on the findings of a joint team of investigators belonging to the CIDG, Misamis Oriental Provincial Police, the Special Investigation Task Group Belmonte, PNP Crime Lab and the National Bureau of Investigation.”

The report recalled: “Last December 11, Belmonte was on his way back to Iligan City after getting off the plane at the airport when his convoy was ambushed. Belmonte survived but three of his men were killed some were wounded.”

The Provincial Prosecutor is expected to form a panel to conduct the preliminary investigation on the case.
