What would you do for a PHP8 (US16 cent) burger? If you answered “swarm like a biblical plague of locusts,” you’ve got company.

Crowds easily numbering in the hundreds descended on Zark’s Burgers outlets yesterday in something reminiscent of “Black Friday” shopping frenzies in the US. Well, minus the injuries. The burger chain’s official Facebook page announced on Sunday that they would be selling burgers for PHP8 (USD.16) to the first 80 customers to celebrate their 8th anniversary. And so the stage was set.

The special promotion was available in all 30 of the chain’s branches nationwide to similar fanfare, but photos and videos of the crowds in San Mateo, Rizal, and Bacoor, Cavite, two towns on the outskirts of Manila, went viral after netizens posted them on Facebook.

Naturally, Filipinos weighed in on the event online and brought out their pop culture reference A-game.

Yesterday, Zark’s thanked customers for the support but also apologized for any inconvenience the large crowds may have caused.
