Boxer Nesthy Petecio bagged the silver in the Olympics women’s featherweight boxing event this afternoon, bowing to Sena Irie of Japan via unanimous decision. But, as Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz told Petecio, “Sa puso ko at sa puso ng bawat Filipino, ikaw ang panalo.” (“In my heart, and in the heart of every Filipino, you are the winner.”)
The weightlifter congratulated Petecio for “bringing pride and honor” to the Philippines, saying she was in tears during the match: “Grabe, ang intense ng laban ninyo.”
Earlier in the day, men’s flyweight boxer Carlos Paalam also secured a medal, after a victory over reigning Olympic champion Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan. Later today, August 3, pole vaulter EJ Obiena will compete in the finals for his event.
