Friends of Jessica Zafra are rallying support for the popular essayist, who is currently confined at the Makati Medical Center.
Zafra was rushed to the hospital on the evening of May 26.
“Initial diagnosis indicated that she did not suffer a stroke, but was dehydrated, which resulted in an electrolyte imbalance. CT and MRI scans show some inflammation of the brain, which may be due to an infection. She is now undergoing neurological observation,” according to a Facebook post meant for the writer’s close friends but has since gone viral.
Coconuts Manila learned that the result of a spinal tap test will be released today, May 28.
Zafra, 49, gained popularity with “Twisted,” a column that ran on Today newspaper in the 1990s and where she proposed world domination through Filipino pop culture. Those essays have been anthologized (Twisted 1 to Twisted 9). She has also written about the Philippines in international publications such as Time and The New Yorker.
Zafra runs her own website, Jessica Rules The Universe, and has a weekly column on Interaksyon.
