Help disaster victims by donating, instead of buying firecrackers, says DOH

Baby, if you Instead on lighting up the skies with pyrotechnics, light up hope for families of recent disasters.

“The appeal came from the Department of Health (DOH), which launched its annual anti-firecracker campaign on Monday,” reports Tina Santos in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona said the money people spend on firecrackers could be put to better use by families who do not have a roof over their heads after a massive quake shook Bohol and parts of Central Visayas, and Supertyphoon Yolanda leveled Tacloban, and swaths of Eastern Visayas.

If people couldn’t help brighten up the skies to welcome the New Year, the local government could step in by organizing community fireworks displays, Ona pointed out.

He also showed a video of alternative merrymaking activities that are a lot more safer than fireworks, including a dance presentation of Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag to the tune of the hit Katy Perry song “Roar.”
